For the first time since Leonard Slatkin was appointed music director of Orchestre National de Lyon we shall hear one of his own compositions. This playful piece, tailor-made for the ONL soloists he has before him throughout the year, was premiered in Detroit in 2014 and will now be performed in Lyon: no fewer than six musicians will take centre stage and for good measure four other soloists will take place of honour for Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante! These two works will be preceded by an overture written by Thomas Adès, the most admired English composer of his generation, for Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and followed by the giant of the orchestral repertoire, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, the first four notes of which have become the most famous introduction in the entire history of music. But we mustn’t forget what comes after, which is masterful….
