2011 : Leonard Slatkin

Internationally acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin was Music Director of the Orchestre national de Lyon (ONL) from September 2011 to June 2017. He is currently the orchestra’s Music Director Laureate. He is also the Music Director Laureate of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), and Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (OFGC). He maintains a rigorous schedule of guest conducting throughout the world and is active as a composer, author, and educator.
Slatkin has received six Grammy awards and 35 nominations. His latest recordings are Jeff Beal’s The Paper Lined Shack on Supertrain Records and Slatkin Conducts Slatkin, a compilation of pieces written by generations of his musical family, including three of his own compositions, on Naxos Records. Naxos has also recently remastered and reissued audiophile editions of his recordings of Gershwin’s and Rachmaninov’s orchestral works (with the SLSO) for Vox. Other Naxos releases include works by Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Berlioz (with the ONL) and music by Copland, Rachmaninov, Borzova, McTee, and John Williams (with the DSO). In addition, he has recorded the complete Brahms, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky symphonies with the DSO (available online as digital downloads).
The 2023-24 season includes engagements with the Oregon Symphony, Orquesta de València, Orquesta Sinfónica de Radio Televisión Española, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland), ONL, SLSO, Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra, Carnegie Mellon University Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, OFGC, Prague Symphony Orchestra, and Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa.
A recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Arts, Slatkin also holds the rank of Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor. He has received the Prix Charbonnier from the Federation of Alliances Françaises, Austria’s Decoration of Honor in Silver, the League of American Orchestras’ Gold Baton Award, and the 2013 ASCAP Deems Taylor Special Recognition Award for his debut book, Conducting Business. His second book, Leading Tones: Reflections on Music, Musicians, and the Music Industry, was published by Amadeus Press in 2017, followed by Classical Crossroads: The Path Forward for Music in the 21st Century (2021). Two volumes of a new series comprising essays that supplement the score-study process are scheduled for release by Rowman & Littlefield in 2024. He is also working on several new compositions.
Slatkin has conducted virtually all the leading orchestras in the world. As Music Director, he has held posts in New Orleans; St. Louis; Washington, DC; London (with the BBCSO); Detroit; and Lyon, France. He has also served as Principal Guest Conductor in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Cleveland.

Trois questions à ...
Quand avez-vous dirigé l’ONL pour la première fois ?
Leonard Slatkin : En 1991 dans un programme qui ressemble à celui que j’aurais pu diriger à l’époque où j’étais directeur musical. Les concerts comprenaient une pièce du compositeur américain Michael Colgrass, les Quatre Derniers Lieder de Richard Strauss et la Troisième Symphonie de Saint-Saëns. Les musiques française et américaine sont devenues ma signature avec l’orchestre.
Vous qui avez dirigé des dizaines d’orchestres dans le monde, quelle est, selon vous, la plus belle qualité de l’Orchestre national de Lyon ?
L. S. : Pour moi, l’ONL a été comme une merveilleuse histoire d’amour qui a duré six ans. Aujourd’hui, nous restons les meilleurs amis du monde. Il m’a appris beaucoup de choses et j’espère qu’il en a aussi appris de moi. Nous avons trouvé un équilibre entre répétitions efficaces et respect total de l’art du compositeur. Plus important encore, l’orchestre a été en mesure de toucher différents publics et possède l’une des audiences les plus jeunes que j’aie connue. Ce que j’aime le plus, c’est son dévouement au plus haut niveau musical. Il y a un désir palpable de donner le meilleur lors des répétitions et des concerts. Je suis très heureux de le retrouver pendant deux semaines lors de la prochaine saison.
Quel est votre souhait le plus cher pour les cinq prochaines années ?
L. S. : Maintenant que je suis sur le point d’avoir 80 ans, j’apprécie les choses positives qui parviennent jusqu’à moi et je néglige celles qui sont négatives. Je prends mes distances par rapport aux responsabilités administratives et je me concentre sur la création musicale. Je profite de toutes les choses qui rendent la vie meilleure : de la bonne nourriture et du bon vin, de belles destinations à visiter et surtout de vrais amis... Mon désir est de vivre assez longtemps pour voir le monde reprendre ses esprits, dans pratiquement tous les domaines. La musique peut jouer un rôle en nous ramenant à certaines valeurs. Nous semblons nous être égarés et il est temps de remettre le train sur les rails.
