Grigori Sokolov
piano

Following his memorable interpretation of Beethoven’s “Hammerklavier” Sonata which won him a standing ovation in the spring of 2013, Grigory Sokolov will return to the Auditorium for the Grands Interprètes series in the autumn. And what has this secretive virtuoso got in store for us? From the maestro’s unchanging ritual – dimly lit hall, brief acknowledgement to the audience, intense concentration, performing without a break– will appear the miracle or enigma which is Sokolov! Artisan or magician? The Russian maestro’s vast musical culture, the immensity of his repertoire, his scientific knowledge of the workings of the piano, his profound knowledge of works tirelessly rethought, scrutinised, analysed for hours, days, months, until each note finds its place within the harmony as a whole, all this is known to us. Despite that, Grigory Sokolov still appears to spring miraculously from the inspiration of the moment, transforming every recital into a major event. As he does every season, Sokolov has only revealed part of his programme, reserving the right to choose the rest in the autumn.
