The virtuoso is not someone who impresses the listener with a firework display. It is someone who lets the technical exploits disappear underneath the power, diversity, beauty of nuances and colours, under the emotional impact of his interpretation.” This statement by Arcadi Volodos is a reflection of the exceptional character of the musician he is today. At a time when piano recitals are too often athletic performances, where artists play fast, increasingly faster, loud, increasingly louder, anyone who has been to one of Volodos’ concerts knows that he has not come to impress them, even though his technique is the most impressive of today’s pianists. When this huge man sits down at the piano and his fingers begin to caress the keyboard, creating an entirely new universe, the listener senses that he will be embarking on a wonderful journey. At one with his instrument, Volodos carves out a stunningly rich world of sound, plush polyphony, full of the most subtle nuances, adding an infinite palette of colours, revealing the sense of the music in his brilliant mastery of both the musical time and narrative time. His love for Brahms is well-known (who could forget his wonderful Intermezzi op. 116 in Lyon in 2013!). He will perform his rarely played Variations in D minor (from the First Sextet) and Klavierstücke op. 76, followed by Schubert’s sublime and final Sonata D. 960.
