Richard Goode is an exceptional artist. Born in the USA he has built an extraordinary career, choosing to focus on a small group of composers from the classical and early Romantic periods. He has acquired a reputation as a musician of exceptional power, depth and sincerity, who was described in theNew York Timesas an artist with nothing to hide. For this short recital he has chosen a rare return to Johann Sebastian Bach, opening with a selection of Sinfonias (also known as Three-Part Inventions), short but polyphonic pieces. Their apparent simplicity (to the ear…) in reality conceals formidable technical challenges for the singers. The second piece, Piano Partita No. , in C minor, is a relatively late work, consisting of six very contrasting dance movements. Bach’s first biographer, Forkel, wrote that the world had never heard piano music of such quality.
