New discoveries are in store with this concert which will feature in the Biennale Musiques en Scène 2016, with two premieres: first, the world premiere of Pong, Daniele Ghisi’s playful piece inspired by the very first tennis matches to appear on computers; second, the French premiere of the Violin Concerto of the Biennale’s guest composer Michel van der Aa, a brilliant jack-of-all-trades. In recent years the Opéra de Lyon has presented two magnificent operas of his: After Life and, last March, Le Jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden). His Violin Concerto overflows with energy, and passages which are abstract, lyrical, jazzy or pop.
As for Osamu Tezuka, hailed as “the father of manga” in Japan, he had a major influence on this art form and as an animator. Over 120 million of his mangas have been sold since he died in 1989. He tirelessly advocated the respect of nature and was a peace and anti-war activist. In Japan his ten short films (produced in 1966) accompanying Pictures at an Exhibition, have become as famous as Walt Disney’s Fantasia here at home.
Le concert du 5 mars ne présente que les Tableaux d’une exposition de Moussorgski, avec les courts-métrages d’Osamu Tezuka.
